African Rock Python, or Python sebae

I took this photo of an African Rock Python in the Okavango Delta. We stopped on one of the little islands to have lunch and a friend almost stepped onto this huge Python. These snakes have very strong muscular bodies used to strangle their prey before it is swallowed whole. They have been known to catch Impala!
The Rock Python is often found close to water, and this one swam away shortly after I took this shot.
When photographing snakes, make sure that the snake you are approaching is not deadly venomous before you get too close to it. Normally there is not much that can be done for snake bite victims out in the wilderness...
The Okavango Delta is one of the tourist hotspots in Africa. Unfortunately, because there is sufficient dollars around in Maun, and because of Botswana's high cost, low traffic policy it can get really expensive to visit this wetland. I will recommend a visit to the delta higher than most other places in Africa for photographers.
