Black-backed Jackal, or

Black-backed Jackal

I took this picture of a Black-backed Jackal near the main waterhole of the Savuti restcamp in the Chobe National Park of Botswana. I think it was staring intently in the direction of a leopard that was in thick bush close by, that we were not able to see. It ran off hastily shortly after this shot was taken.

If you want to experience these guys more closely, I can recommend a visit to the Nossob restcamp in the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park. They can be a bit of a nuisance though, especially for those with Nylon ground tents...

Our visit to Chobe National Park in June 2005 was a magical experience, as visits to this paradise tend to be. It is very high on my list of recommended places to visit on an Africa Safari. I just do hope that the Department of Wildlife and National Parks start doing something about the bursting Elephant population, as the game density of other animals and the general quality of the bush is suffering as a result of high Elephant numbers.

If you also want opportunities to take pictures like this one, why don't you visit my Africa Safaris section...
