Cape Sparrow, or
Passer melanurus

Cape Sparrow

I took this picture while camping at the De Hoop Nature Reserve, South Africa. The Cape Sparrow is a very common bird in South Africa. The male is the only sparrow in the region with a black and white head. The female and juveniles have grey heads and are distinguished from the Great Sparrow and House Sparrow through similar head patterns to the male.

Aspiring nature photographers should always have common birds or animals on their files as well, and not only concentrate on the big five for instance. Imagine the red face if a photo editor asks you for a picture of an impala and you do not have any decent ones...

De Hoop Nature Reserve in South Africa is not one of the most visited reserves. However, it is well known for its Whale Trail hike where Southern Right Whales can be seen almost constantly while hiking. It is also a good place to see antelope such as Eland and Bontebok. The birdlife is spectacular in that part of the country.
