Common Hippopotamus, or
Hippopotamus amphibius

Hippo family

I took this photo of a Common Hippopotamus family on the Chobe floodplain, with the sun setting in the opposite direction. It was a fairly tricky exposure with the water being much lighter than the Hippos and the rest of the shot.

I like it because they are all looking at me. This might be because the vehicles have interupted their afternoon nap (Oops!). They walked back into the water moments after this shot.

The Hippo is Africa's most dangerous animal, and people get killed by Hippos on a frequent basis. They can run as fast as 60 kilometres an hour, which is magnificent considering their massive size and short legs. This is twice as fast as Olympic sprinters!

They weigh up to two tons, and frequently bask in the sun during the day. They mainly feed at night.
