Elephant, or Loxodonta africana

I took this photo of an Elephant in Botswana, while travelling between Nata and Maun. Botswana is a very well conserved country and wildlife still occurs throughout the country. This one was standing right next to the highway.
Several species has been described over time. Today the larger Savanna and Forest races are the only two distinguished. Apart from differences in size, the Forest species have smaller and rounder ears, and have thinner, longer and more downward pointing tusks.
At present the populations in Botswana are booming, and culling is being considered. Many naturalists take a very strong view to culling and this is a very sensitive issue. Relocated bulls have caused havoc in the past, so doing this is not ideal.
