Male Lion Picture

Male Lion Picture

I took this Male Lion Picture very early one morning close to the Mata-Mata restcamp in the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park. The lions (or most probably lionesses) had brought down a Gemsbok (Oryx) very close to the road during the night. It was a true family feast!

The sun was behind the lions, so I couldn't work with the magical early morning sunlight on the lions. If they were on the other side of the road, the pictures surely would have been better. That said, it is a sight that I will never forget, and I enjoyed the moment tremendously.

It also reminded me that there are no guarantees in the world of wildlife photography...

My visit to the Kgalagadi Transfronitier Park in February 2005 was my first. I immediately fell in love with this huge thirstland. It is suited very well to wildlife photography, and I try to go there once annually now. It is a good place to see the three big cats and it is known as the bird of prey hotspot.

I filmed a cheetah kill there during 2009 with a high-end Canon video camera. And now I know it is one of the best places in the world to go and watch predators. ;-) Well worth a visit...

If you would like opportunities to take pictures like this one, scratch around in my Africa Safaris section and start planning a trip! It won't happen unless you plan for it.
