Male Lion, or Panthera leo

Male Lion

I took this picture of a captive male Lion at the Drakenstein Lion Park near Cape Town, South Africa. Such males can weigh up to 225 kg. It is the largest of Africa's cats and certainly the best known. It is also often seen.

Taking pictures of captive animals gives you good practice, and the resulting pictures can be of value as stock photographs. You can get closer to captive animals than is possible in the wild. However, part of the enjoyment of nature photography is the interaction with nature, so I try to concentrate my photography on wild animals.

Drakenstein Lion Park gives visitors to Cape Town a chance to see these magnificant cats. It is situated less than an hour's drive from anywhere on the Cape Peninsula, and will certainly give you your money's worth.

If you also want opportunities to take pictures like this one, why don't you visit my Africa Safaris section...
