Ostrich, or Struthio camelus

This photograph of a male Ostrich was taken on a cloudy day in the De Hoop Nature Reserve, South Africa. It is a flightless bird, and its meat is a delicacy enjoyed by residents and tourists alike. The male is a beautiful black and white bird, while the female is a rather boring grey.
This bird has very powerful legs and can easily out run humans. It can also kill with a well-placed kick.
De Hoop Nature Reserve in South Africa is not one of the most visited reserves. However, it is well known for its Whale Trail hike where Southern Right Whales can be seen almost constantly while hiking. It is also a good place to see antelope such as Eland and Bontebok. The birdlife is spectacular in that part of the country.
