Puff Adder, or Bitis arietans

This photo of a Puff Adder crossing a dirt road was taken while driving in convoy on a tour in Botswana. The broad spade shaped head and upward facing nostrils are key identification attributes. Its venom causes swelling and severe pain, and can lead to death.
I took the photograph from my vehicle, and I would not advise anyone to approach such a dangerous species too closely. Always retain your respect for nature and realise that you are invading the animal's habitat and not the other way round!
Of all areas accesible by vehicle from our home in Cape Town, I must say that my favourite remains Northern Botswana. This region is rich with opportunity and offers the visitor a chance to experience African wildlife in a way that few oher areas can match. Moremi Game Reserve and Chobe National Park are two of my favourite reserves, and both fall in this region. The Okavango Delta with all its over-the-top luxury resorts is the main feature of Northern Botswana.
