Rock Hyrax, or Procavia capensis

Rock Hyrax

This shot of a fairly old Rock Hyrax was taken on an early morning walk in De Hoop Nature Reserve. The sun was behind the cliff on which these animals live, so light was not the best. I plan to go back there some day and get a late afternoon shot.

One thing making the Hyrax famous is its family ties to the elephant. This is something to be proud of for such a small mammal. It doesn't have a tail, and small children are often told that the big elephant took its tail and used it for a trunk.

De Hoop Nature Reserve in South Africa is not one of the most visited reserves. However, it is well known for its Whale Trail hike where Southern Right Whales can be seen almost constantly while hiking. It is also a good place to see antelope such as Eland and Bontebok. The birdlife is spectacular in that part of the country.

If you also want opportunities to take pictures like this one, why don't you visit my Africa Safaris section...
