Squacco Heron, or Ardeolla ralloides

This photo was taken while on a speed boat on the Okavango Delta. It is a Squacco Heron, the smallest Heron in the region. While not flying it looks like a Bittern, but it shows completely white wings while in flight, as can be seen in the photo.
The Okavango Delta is one of the tourist hotspots in Africa. Unfortunately, because there is sufficient dollars around in Maun, and because of Botswana's high cost, low traffic policy it can get really expensive to visit this wetland.
I recommend a visit to the delta higher than most other places in Africa for photographers, especially the Moremi Game Reserve area of the delta. This area is well preserved and protected against human intervention. Chobe National Park should be combined with the Okavango Delta on a visit to Northern Botswana.
