Waterbuck, or Kobus ellipsiprymnus

I took this photo of a pair of Waterbuck on one of the most memorable afternoons of my photographic career. We were on an organised tour to Botswana, but would have little chance to visit the national parks, so we split off with our tour group and spent the afternoon inside Chobe National Park. Absolute photography heaven! If you are visiting Africa once in your lifetime, visit northern Botswana. You will not be sorry.
You get two sub-species of this beautiful animal. Those in my photograph are from the common or ellipsiprymnus group. The other group is the defassa. The main distinctive feature is the rump rings on the common group versus a solid white rump patch on the defassa group.
Chobe National Park is one of my favourite destinations in Africa. If you have been there previously you will smile while reading this. The experience stays with you forever. I can recommend a visit to this park (and northern Botswana) as high as any of Africa's other attractions. You WILL enjoy taking pictures there. Period.
If you also want opportunities to take pictures like this one, why don't you visit my
